Join us for an evening of learning the art of handmade lei. Rooted in Hawaiian tradition, lei are often created to celebrate special occasions such as Mother’s Day, graduations, weddings, and birthdays. During this workshop, you’ll work with a variety of flowers, some foraged materials, and beads to create your own unique piece. All materials will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring any personal objects (beads, flowers) if you’d like to incorporate something special into your lei.
The workshop will be led by Maia Vinhateiro, who is graduating this spring from URI with a double major in Textile Merchandising and Design and Art History. During a semester in Hawaii, she studied lei-making under Andrew Mau at Island Boy Shop, where she fell in love with creating ephemeral art and working with flowers.
